Description
A one-day trip from Tirana to Berat and Gjirokastër is a long but rewarding journey that showcases some of Albania’s most beautiful historic towns. The day begins very early, ideally around sunrise, as you leave Tirana and head south toward Berat. After a drive of about two to two and a half hours, you arrive in the “city of a thousand windows,” where white Ottoman houses climb up the hillside below the impressive Berat Castle. Here, you can spend a short but meaningful time walking through the stone streets, enjoying the views, and exploring the charm of the old quarters like Mangalem Quarter. A quick coffee or light breakfast in the old town is enough before continuing the journey.
By late morning, you leave Berat and drive further south through the Albanian countryside toward Gjirokastër. The road takes you past wide fields and rolling hills, and then you reach Gjirokastër, a UNESCO-listed town known for its stone architecture and dramatic mountain setting. The highlight here is the imposing Gjirokastër Castle, which offers sweeping views over the valley. You can then wander through the cobbled streets of the old bazaar, soaking in the atmosphere and perhaps stopping for a late lunch or coffee.
By late afternoon, the return journey begins. Leaving Gjirokastër, you drive back north toward Tirana. As the sun sets and the landscapes gradually fade into evening, the trip winds down, bringing you back to the capital late at night. Although the day is demanding and filled with driving, it offers a compact glimpse into Albania’s rich history, distinctive architecture, and scenic beauty—all within a single, unforgettable journey.
