Description
Vlora, marking the beginning of the Albanian Riviera, is graced by the waters of both the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. This city, with roots dating back to the 6th century B.C.E. and historically known as Aulona, is situated in one of the most picturesque areas of southern Albania. It boasts a stunning combination of both rocky and sandy beaches along its coast.
Not only is Vlora a natural paradise with its breathtaking beaches, but it also holds significant historical value for Albania. It was here that the country's First National Assembly took place, leading to the declaration of independence from the Ottoman Empire on November 28, 1912. Our tour begins at the iconic 'Flag Square' (Sheshi I Flamurit), the site where the Albanian flag was hoisted and independence was proclaimed.
During the tour, you'll gain insights into both the ancient and recent history of Vlora by visiting the newly renovated Old City. Following this, we'll explore the Ethnographic Museum, nestled in the historic Muradije neighborhood. Here, you'll delve into the traditions, attire, and furnishings typical of Albanian culture.
Continuing our journey, we'll visit the Muradije Mosque, a masterpiece crafted in 1542 by the renowned architect Sinan the Great. This mosque stands as Sinan's sole remaining work in Albania. The tour concludes with a visit to Vlora's Old Market, a vibrant spot where you can experience and savor Albanian culinary delights and traditions.
