Description
Begin your adventure in Valbona, a hidden gem in the Albanian Alps. Surrounded by dramatic peaks, alpine meadows, and the clear waters of the Valbona River, this valley is a haven for hikers and nature enthusiasts. Enjoy the crisp mountain air and traditional stone guesthouses for an authentic Albanian experience.
From Valbona, travel to Fierza and board a ferry that crosses Komani Lake, a man-made reservoir created by the Drin River. This ferry ride is considered one of the most breathtaking boat journeys in Europe. Towering cliffs, emerald-green waters, and lush forested slopes surround you as the ferry navigates the narrow canyons.
Halfway through the journey, disembark near Shala River, often referred to as “the Thailand of Albania” due to its surreal turquoise waters and steep limestone cliffs. Accessible only by boat, Shala River is a true retreat for nature lovers. Swim in the crystal-clear waters, hike along secluded trails, or simply unwind at a riverside guesthouse made of wood and stone.
After your visit to Shala River, return by boat to Koman village, the ferry terminal at the southern end of Komani Lake. While Koman itself is a small, quiet settlement, it serves as a key transit point for travelers heading to Shkoder or Tirana.
End your journey in Shkoder, one of the oldest and most culturally rich cities in Albania. Located on the shores of Lake Shkoder and beneath the gaze of Rozafa Castle, the city offers a vibrant contrast to the wild and isolated north. Stroll down the pedestrian boulevard, Rruga Kole Idromeno, lined with cafes, boutique shops, and pastel-colored buildings reflecting the city’s Italian and Ottoman influences.
