Description
Step just outside Gjirokastër’s bustling Old Bazaar and into the peaceful charm of Lagja “11 Janari”, where you’ll be welcomed onto a stunning family-owned terrace by your host, Evisa. This non-vegetarian cooking class invites you to explore traditional Albanian flavors in a warm, family setting — all with panoramic views of Gjirokastër Castle.
Much more than just a class, this is a heartfelt experience shared with Evisa and her family, who have been welcoming travelers for over six years. Their open-hearted hospitality ensures you’ll feel like part of the family from the very first moment.
What You’ll Experience:
Warm Welcome in a Hidden Corner of Gjirokastër
Meet your host at Çerçiz Topulli Square, then take a short walk (2 minutes) to the family’s hostel terrace in the 11 Janari neighborhood. You’ll be greeted with your choice of homemade drink, raki or local wine, while enjoying fresh air and a peaceful view of the castle surrounded by greenery.
Hands-On Cooking Class
With Evisa’s guidance, you’ll dive into a hands-on cooking session featuring a flavorful non-vegetarian menu:
– Chicken with mashed bread – slow-cooked and seasoned with traditional spices
– Qifqi – the signature rice balls of Gjirokastër, made with rice, spearmint, eggs, black pepper, and salt
– Halva – a traditional Albanian dessert you’ll learn to prepare from scratch
The dishes are served with a seasonal salad and feta cheese, offering a full and satisfying meal.
Shared Meal with a View
Enjoy the food you’ve prepared on the terrace as the city and castle unfold before your eyes. Whether you choose raki, wine, or a soft drink, the relaxed atmosphere and engaging conversations make this a meal to remember.
Take-Home Recipe
