Description

Discover the stunning city of Berat, often referred to as the 'City of a Thousand Windows.' This guided tour will take you through the charming streets of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, exploring its rich history, beautiful Ottoman architecture, and vibrant local culture. Start your tour at the Berat Castle, one of the oldest and most important castles in Albania. Situated on a hilltop, it offers panoramic views over the city, the Osum River, and the surrounding countryside. Inside the castle, find a mix of ancient Byzantine and Ottoman structures. The castle is still home to a small community, and you can wander through narrow, cobbled streets, discovering old houses and churches. Visit the Onufri National Iconographic Museum, housed within the castle walls, where you can admire stunning Byzantine icons painted by the famous Albanian iconographer, Onufri. Next, head to the Mangalem Quarter, one of the most iconic neighborhoods in Berat, famous for its traditional Ottoman houses, which seem to be stacked upon one another, creating a dramatic view of the city. The white houses with their characteristic windows—referred to as the 'thousand windows' of Berat—are a distinctive feature of this area. As you walk through the narrow streets of Mangalem, you'll feel like you’ve stepped back in time, surrounded by well-preserved buildings and picturesque views. Across the river from Mangalem is the Gorica Quarter, which is equally charming and picturesque. The neighborhood is characterized by traditional stone houses with wooden balconies. To get there, cross the Gorica Bridge, a historical landmark of Berat that has been standing since the 18th century. From the bridge, enjoy a beautiful view of the two neighborhoods and the river below. The Gorica area also offers lovely walking paths along the riverbanks. Visit the Ethnological Museum of Berat, located in a traditional house, which provides insight into the way of life in Berat throughout the centuries. See authentic exhibits of traditional Albanian costumes, household items, and tools used by the people of Berat. The museum’s exhibits help you understand the local customs, craftsmanship, and the lifestyle that has been preserved over the years. Visit the Byzantine church of Saint Mary’s Church (Kisha e Shën Marisë), located within the castle complex, dedicated to the Virgin Mary and containing stunning frescoes. The church’s historical and artistic significance makes it an important stop during your visit. The frescoes, dating back to the 14th century, offer a glimpse into the religious history of the region. Visit the Onufri Iconographic Museum, located inside the Berat Castle, dedicated to the famous Albanian iconographer Onufri, whose icons are among the finest examples of Byzantine art. The museum features a rich collection of religious icons, including works by Onufri himself, and offers a deep dive into the history and significance of Albanian Orthodox iconography.
